The root password on the ILOM is currently unknown. You have root access to the O/S installed on the platform and want to change the ILOM password back to the default changeme.
The method to reset the ILOM password is different for each platform. Some allow for password reset via an onboard jumper. Others allow for the password to be reset via a BIOS setting. Newer versions of the ILOM also allow for ILOM password recovery via the serial management connection. Refer to your product documentation to see which method applies to your system.
The method explained below is not documented and is primarily used when a) the system is located in a remote data center, or b) you don't want to shut down the host. Both the onboard jumper method and the BIOS setting most likely will require the host OS be shutdown.
Solution
1. If needed, check ipmitool version and path:
# which ipmitool
/usr/sbin/ipmitool
# /usr/sbin/ipmitool -V
ipmitool version 1.8.8
2. Reset the password using one of the following two commands:
# /usr/sbin/ipmitool user set password 0x02 changeme
# /usr/sbin/ipmitool raw 0x06 0x47 0x02 0x02 0x63 0x68 0x61 0x6e 0x67 0x65 0x6d 0x65 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00
There will be no confirmation after running the ipmitool command, however the ILOM root password will be changed to changeme.
