1 Oracle9i DBA Certified Master Practicum

The practicum is targeted toward Oracle9i DBA OCPs with 3 - 4 years of professional Oracle experience. To become an Oracle9i DBA Certified Master a candidate must complete two required advanced DBA courses from Oracle University and pass the Oracle9i DBA Certified Master practicum.
The practicum will be conducted at an Oracle University facility in each global region. View the scheduled practicum events and details on how to register.
Participants in the Oracle9i DBA Certified Master practicum are subject to the rules and guidelines as specified in the Oracle Certification Program Candidate Agreement. All participants must display valid identification to the proctor. Divulging practicum content is a violation of the Candidate Guidelines and may potentially result in the revocation of an individual's OCP and OCM credentials.
The practicum is an exam and as such it is administered accordingly to ensure fairness and security.
Participating in the Practicum
The practicum starts promptly at 9:00 AM on the first day. Plan on finishing no sooner than 6:00 PM the first day. The second day of the practicum is scheduled from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Plan your travel schedule accordingly to ensure you do not jeopardize your opportunity to work through each scenario. Participants are not permitted to enter the classroom once a scenario has started and they must wait until the next scenario.

Practicum Environment
The practicum is conducted in a dedicated Oracle University classroom environment. An Oracle proctor facilitates the event by administering scenarios and adhering to specific scenario time frames. The proctor does not score the exam and does not have access to scoring information.
Participants are randomly assigned a dedicated server that is their workstation for each day of the event. Servers are isolated from the Internet and Intranet in an effort to maintain security. It is the responsibility of the participant to effectively manage the database and instance environment on their server to ensure performance and be able to recover from failure scenarios. The inability to recover from a failure scenario may impact a participant's completion of subsequent scenarios.
All scenarios have time limitations that require participants to employ best practices in order to successfully complete assigned tasks. Each scenario explicitly describes the required end state that participants must achieve.
Participants are not allowed to use personal documentation or notes during the practicum nor will they be permitted to collaborate with other participants. Cellular phones, pages, and PDA's will not be allowed in the practicum classroom. Participants can use the notepad on their desktop to keep notes during the practicum. Participants must agree to the same guidelines that apply to all Oracle9i DBA Certified Professional exams and can be found in the Oracle Certification Program Candidate Agreement at:
http://www.oracle.com//education/certification/index.html?canagreemt.html
The software environment for each server consists of the United Linux 1.0 operating system using the KDE interface. Oracle9.2.0.2 is installed on each server along with a complete Oracle documentation set.
Participants can choose to work in either Linux and Oracle CLI or GUI environment when available during the practicum.

Preparing for the Practicum
The best way to prepare for the practicum is to practice in a representative Linux and Oracle environment. United Linux 1.0 operating system with KDE and Oracle9.2.0.2 are used during the practicum.
Since fundamental Linux knowledge is necessary, you can practice on either a United Linux 1.0 or RedHat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 operating systems. Both support KDE.
Trial versions of RedHat Linux can be downloaded from http://www.redhat.com
Review the Minimum Prerequisite Skills section for more detail about specific skills.
Oracle9.2.0.2 can be downloaded from the Oracle Technology Network at http://otn.oracle.com.
Successful practicum candidates are those individuals who have actually worked through each of the objectives that are listed for the practicum and have extensively practiced backup, restore, and recovery operations.

Scoring
Participants are scored on their ability to complete assigned tasks and to recover from various database failure scenarios. Data from each participant's environment is collected at the end of each scenario and this data is used to determine the final score. In some scenarios, participants may receive partial credit, however the inability to recover from a failure scenario results in zero credit for an entire scneario. The proctor is not responsible for scoring the practicum and will not have scoring information during the event. Participants will be notified of the final score 2 -3 weeks following the practicum.
Participants must achieve a minimum of score of 70% to pass the practicum.
Upon attaining a successful score, a participant is awarded the Oracle9i DBA OCM credential. If a participant does not achieve a passing score then they are required to retake the entire practicum at a later date.
